Purpose
An important guide to help drivers learn a procedure and technique for manually lifting heavy loads to help prevent injury.
When to Use This SOP
Anytime loading or unloading luggage or cargo from a luggage compartment underneath a bus.
Who Should Use This SOP
This is a compulsory procedure and technique that anyone who may be required to load or unload luggage from a luggage compartment.

Loading Procedure
1. Test Item Weight
- Test the item with hands to assess the weight. Do not lift the item.
- Nudge the item with foot to further assess the weight.
- For more accurate weight assessment, use the hand scales. The item does not need to be lifted off the ground. [the hand scales were never acquired or provided]
- For heavy (over 12kg) or awkward items seek assistance.

2. Move Item Close to Edge of Luggage Compartment
Drag or slide the item close to the edge of the luggage compartment before attempting to lift the item into the compartment.

3. Prepare to Lift
- Point feet towards the load to be lifted
- Bend at the knees, keeping the back straight

4. Lift Safely
- Use two-handed lifting if possible and lift the luggage and items by holding onto the handles of the items.
- Hold the load close to the body.
- Rotate the load using feet to avoid twisting the spine.
- Set luggage on compartment edge


5. Position Luggage With Grab Stick
- Use the grab stick to push items towards the back of the bin.
- IMPORTANT: Getting physically into the luggage compartment is an absolute last resort!

Unloading Procedure
1. Pull Luggage Forward With Grab Stick
- Use the grab stick to drag the item towards the edge of the luggage compartment.
- IMPORTANT: Getting physically into the luggage compartment is an absolute last resort!

2. Prepare to Lift
- Point feet towards the load to be lifted
- Bend at the knees, keeping the back straight
3. Lift Safely
- Use two-handed lifting if possible and lift the luggage and items by holding onto the handles of the items.
- Hold the load close to the body.
- Rotate the load using feet to avoid twisting the spine.

4. Seek Assistance For Heavy and Awkward Items
For heavy (over 12kg) or awkward items than seek assistance.
